- The first cotton mill in Anderson County, South Carolina, the Pendleton Spinning Factory, later known as the Pendleton Manufacturing Company, begins operation in what is now La France, South Carolina. This plant, or rather, its vastly upgraded facility, still operates as a division of Riegel Textile Corporation known as LaFrance Industries, the oldest continually operating plant in the State of South Carolina.
