November 20 in Clemson History

• 1920: The Tigers lose, 0-14, to Furman in Greenville, who will enjoy a 9-1 season.
• 1930: The YMCA auditorium picture is "Shadow of the Law", starring William Powell, released June 6, 1930. - admission is twenty-five cents. Palmetto Literary Society meeting - debate topic: "Should the U.S. have uniform marriage and divorce laws? Minaret Club meets Thursday night. Phi Psi meeting - banquet planning, initiation.
• 1943: The Tigers conclude the 1943 season with a 6-41 loss to Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Tigers endure a 2-6 season, 2-3 in conference, for a 7th place tie in the Southern Conference. Coach Frank Howard had only freshmen to play as War Department regulations prohibited Army trainees from playing intercollegiate sports. "The best thing that can be said of them is that they kept playing football," said Howard. (Biondo, Steve, "A Terrible Resolve: Clemson men in war", Clemson World, Fall 1991, Volume 44, Number 3, page 26.)
• 1948: For Homecoming, the ninth-ranked Tigers host the Duquesne Dukes, shut them out, 42-0. "Clemson celebrated homecoming by blasting a hapless Dequesne [sic] eleven. The feature of the game was a eighty-yard punt return by Ray Mathews. Mathews also passed to [Oscar] Thompson in a play that covered seventy yards. The victory almost assured the Tigers of a bowl bid. The other touchdowns were added by [Ray] Clanton, [Jackie] Calvert, [Dick] Hendley, and Mathews. In a ceremony after the game Coach Howard was presented a new car by Clemson followers." (TAPS, Volume XXXIX, 1949, page 407.) The cadet corps performs a brief drill exhibition at halftime and then are released to seek out dates in the stands afterwards. (TAPS, 1949, page 260.) Frank Howard is presented with a new black Dodge sedan. ("Clemson: Where The Tigers Play", by Sam Blackman, Bob Bradley and Chuck Kriese, Sports Publishing, L.L.C., 2001, page 42). Sam Donahue and his orchestra perform at the Homecoming dance in the Fike Fieldhouse gym that night.
• 1954: Clemson travels to Auburn, loses, 6-27.
• 1969: William Christopher "Dabo" Swinney born in Birmingham, Alabama.
• 1970: The Tiger publishes full-size reproduction of a letter dated November 17 from President Robert C. Edwards to Tiger editor Richard Harpootlian on page one reprimanding him for allowing the Chronicle protest button photo to be published in the November 13 issue of the campus paper.
• 1971: Clemson is defeated by North Carolina State in Death Valley, 23-31. The Central Dance Association presents Poco in concert in Littlejohn Coliseum at 8 p.m. Tickets are $3.25 in advance, $4.25 on the floor, and $4.25 at the door. CDA after party held at the Y Barn from 11 p.m. until... Admission is $2 per couple.
• 1971: Central Dance Association plans a concert in Littlejohn Coliseum with Rod Stewart and the Faces, announced in August, but it will be postponed until April 22, 1972 when the artists require more time in the studio in the United Kingdom.
• 1974: The Clemson Players present Henrik Ibsen's play "Ghosts" in Daniel Auditorium.
• 1976: In a gratifying upset, the Tigers beat the Gamecocks in Death Valley, 28-9, to finish the season 3-6-2. The Cocks are 6-5.
• 1979: The Chronicle staff meets with Deans Walter T. Cox and Susan G. Deloney over possibly controversial nude photos in latest issue but they okay the layout of the magazine.
• 1982: Tenth-ranked Tigers put the hurt on the unranked Gamecocks in Death Valley, 24-6.
• 1993: Ken Hatfield coaches the Tigers to a 16-13 win over South Carolina in Columbia.
• 1998: Cox Plaza is dedicated next to the Edgar A. Brown University Union in honor of Dean Walter T. Cox.
• 1999: The Tigers ice the Gamecock's winless 0-11 season with a 31-21 victory for the purple and orange in Williams-Bryce Stadium.
• 2004: Clemson defeats the University of South Carolina in Death Valley, 29-7, but ugly melee breaks out between the teams late in the fourth quarter, requiring coaches and state troopers to get involved to quell the mayhem. Both schools are bowl eligible, but both schools announce they will not accept bowl bids, as self punishment for unacceptable behavior at the final game. This is the Tigers' 600th victory, and the team ends the season with a 6-5 record, 4-4 in the ACC for sixth place in conference. This is also Lou Holtz's final game as head coach of the Gamecocks.
• 2006: The team captains of the University of Virginia football team collect over $2,000 from their teammates for the McElrathbey fund. The Womens basketball team plays South Carolina in Columbia at 7 p.m., but falls, 48-80.
• 2009: The Clemson Wiki Main Page tallies hit 87,000.
