August 21 in Clemson History

  • 1873: The Air Line depot "at Easley Station has been rapidly constructed" reports The Pickens Sentinel this date, one of only two extant issues for that year (Volume 3 of the publication).   • 1959: The Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army Savannah District, produces map depicting final arrangement for the Clemson College Protective Works, Hartwell Project, Savannah River Basin, Savannah River, Georgia and South Carolina. It shows the Upper diversion dam, the Lower diversion dam, the Dike, the Diversion channel, and the Pumping Station. (Map in Special Collections, Strom Thurmond Institute).
  • 1965: President Robert C. Edwards hosts ~1,500 freshmen at his home for a picnic. Music provided by the Versatiles, a dance band from Anderson, folk singer Janet Newell, accordionist Jerry Raz, and singing trio the Ethnics. Master of ceremonies is student body President Grey Walsh. (The Tiger, Friday, August 27, 1965, Volume LIX, Number 1, page 1).
  • 1967: Registration and the securing of class cards is held. (The Tiger, "Orientation - Long Lines And Even Longer Hours", 7 August 1967, Volume LXI, Number 1, page 1.) A free concert by the Tams is held in the Amphitheatre on Monday night. (The Tiger, "New Social Activities To Welcome Freshmen", 7 August 1967, Volume LXI, Number 1, page 1.)
  • 1988: Winston Wayne Ramsey, a senior English major, is killed when the car in which he was riding strikes a tree early Sunday morning. The driver, Samuel Andrew Welchel, received minor injuries. Ramsey, 20, was associate editor of The Tiger, where he also served as circulation manager and editorial editor. He was a 1985 honor graduate of Summerville High School. While there he was a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society. (The Tiger, August 26, 1988, page 1.) The staff dedicates the issue to Ramsey.
  • 2006: August 21-August 25 - The United States Army Corps of Engineers conduct a site inspection of the former Lake Issaqueena Bombing Range to discern the presence or absence of World War II munitions or munitions components.
  • 2007: Black Dog Music in Victoria Square closes its doors, the last music store in Clemson.
  • August 20, 2009-August 22, 2009: Spittoono XXIX, "Evolutionarily Redneck" held at the National Guard Armory ballfield, 6 p.m. - 2 a.m., featuring 18 bands in three days. Admission is free, all proceeds after expenses go to charity. No glass containers or coolers allowed.
