May 11 in Clemson History

  • 1918: The USS Clemson is laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Virginia. It is named for Henry A. Clemson, an officer in the United States Navy in the early 1800s, born in 1820, and lost on December 8, 1846 when the USS Somers capsized off Vera Cruz in a gale while chasing a blockade runner.
  • 1935
  • 1950: The Tiger newspaper reports that Tiger Brotherhood has named Mrs. M. E. Dyess as Clemson's Mother of the Year. Mrs. Dyess is the mother of Medal of Honor recipient, LTC Jimmie Dyess, Clemson Class of '31.
  • 2007: Commencement - Colleges AF&LS, AA&H, E&S at 9:30 a.m., Colleges B&BS, HE&HD at 2:30 p.m. Deadline for IPTAY football season ticket requests.
