Edgar's is a bowling and pool lounge in the old Edgar A. Brown University Union below the McCabe and Holmes dorms.

[edit] General Info

Edgar's was originally the only bar located directly on campus, opening in 1976. In years past it was open almost every night, presenting small bands, open mic nights, karaoke, and so forth. The Union booked a wide variety of acts over the years, from local bands like Dick Childs' Guitar Army, who filled the house to overflowing, to dinner theatre, with such acts as the Alpha-Omega Players, in 1980. Multiple bands were being scheduled for the venue weekly well into the 1990s. The raising of the alcohol consumption age negatively impacted the on-campus facility as only a quarter of the students were of age.

Due to waning popularity and attendence, Edgar's bar area was closed most nights by the mid-late 2000s, with the exception of special occasions such as concerts. Reportedly, the final nail in the coffin for Clemson's on-campus bar, was the last student manager, in 2005, who failed to properly enforce i.d. checks of patrons. Following this situation, no faculty or administrative member could be found to play adviser to Edgar's and the student nightclub closed its doors after 29 years. By 2008, the old bar fixtures had been completely removed.

The rest of the area, referred to as the Union Underground houses a 10-lane bowling alley, an Xbox Arena, ping-pong tables, TVs, a projection TV (mainly for big sporting events) and 10 full-size pool tables. They hold both 9 and 8 ball tournaments regularly and have recently begun to hold poker tournaments.

[edit] Xbox Arena

On January 11, 2006 Edgar's replaced the arcade room with an Xbox Arena. The barstools have been replaced with couches and the arcade machines have been replaced with four Xbox consoles each paired with a TV. For $2 an hour per controller gamers can choose from a growing list of games to play on. The Xboxes are also networked together for the potential of hosting sixteen players simultaneously in one game.
