Events that occurred in 1914:

  • March 25: Robert Cook Edwards born in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, the son of John T. and Effie Cook Edwards.
  • May 5: John D. Rockefeller pledges $50,000 for construction of a Y.M.C.A. at Clemson Agricultural College, the first building on campus financed by private donations.
  • June 14: Bosnian-Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinates of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, in Sarajevo. Austria-Hungary's resulting demands against the Kingdom of Serbia lead to the activation of a series of alliances in Europe, and within weeks the Great War is off and running.
  • August 27: The first Clemson Homecoming begins.
  • August 29: At a meeting of the Clemson Alumni Association held this date in the College Chapel, the following resolution was unanimously adopted:
"Resolved; That we respectfully petition the Board of Trustees of Clemson to name the new athletic field 'Riggs Field' in honor of President W. M. Riggs."
That motion was passed not on account of the distinguished services which Dr. Riggs has rendered to the College in the matter of athletics, but on account of the profound faith which the Alumni have in Dr. Riggs and as a token of the appreciation of his services to the College in all phases of College life.   • September 9: Fall semester begins.
  • Fall: The Clemson football team plays every game on the road this season.
  • October 3: In a road game, Clemson ties Davidson, 0-0. The Tigers lead the series, 5-2-2.
  • October 10: The Tigers fall to Tennessee in Knoxville, 0-27. Tennessee ties the series at 3-3-2.
  • October 17: In road game at Alabama Polytechnic College (later Auburn), Clemson is blanked, 0-28. Auburn leads the series, 3-7.
  • October 22: In fourth game of the season, the Tigers get their first win, shutting out Furman, 57-0, in Greenville. The first meeting with Furman since 1902, the Tigers lead the series, 3-0.
  • October 29: The Tigers defeat the Gamecocks in Columbia, 29-6, and lead the series 9-3.
  • October 31: The Tigers down the Citadel, 14-0, in Charleston, South Carolina. Tigers own the series, 6-0.
  • November 7: Clemson defeats Georgia in Athens, 35-13. The Tigers lead the series, 9-7-1.
  • November 14: The Tigers defeat VMI, 27-23, in a game played in Richmond, Virginia, the first meeting with this opponent.
  • November 18: The recommendation that the new playing field be named for President W. M. Riggs by the Clemson Alumni Association is unanimously adopted by the Board of Trustees at their meeting this date. (The Tiger, "Dedication of Riggs Field", 28 September 1915, Volume XI, Number 2, page 4.)
  • November 26: In final game of the season, Georgia Tech wins over the Tigers, 6-26, in Atlanta. Tech leads the series 6-8-1. Clemson ends season with a 5-3-1 record.
